As editor, my job is to provide feedback on multiple levels. On the most basic level, I proofread each line and ensure that they are stylistically consistent with current stylistic guidelines for foreign language subtitles. I ensure that each line tracks easily in the time it is on the screen and that they are consistent across scenes and episodes.

On a higher level, I provide structural and conceptual feedback on how concepts are conveyed cross-culturally in an English translation. This is especially relevant in situations where there are puns in the original Japanese that cannot be communicated word-for-word and have to be completely restructured. I act as a stand-in for the Western audience and ensure that the tone and content of the dialogue are both legible and accurate, challenging them on word choice, register, linguistic connotations, word structure, gendered language, and imagery.

Finally, I ensure that all of these moving parts consistently support the central themes of the show. This involves helping the translator to establish the central vocabulary of repeated ideas, as well as considering how themes are reflected in a variety of situations and voices. Shoujo Kakumei Utena relies heavily on surrealism, imagery, and non-linear story structures, so an accurate reading requires both visual and literary interpretive frameworks. My job is to keep all possible readings in mind and be aware of how the story suggests certain interpretations or where it intentionally keeps meaning open-ended. I pinpoint specific lines and scenes that are pivotal to episode- and show-wide thematic arcs and give suggestions on where certain word choices favor certain readings.
